Level 2: Certified Mezcal Sommelier Seminar

This course is intended for Mezcal Specialists who have already taken the ASI Level 1 seminar and are interested in furthering their understanding of Oaxaca’s wild agaves. Over the course of the Level 2 certification, we will explore Oaxaca’s past, present and future, discussing the recent challenges and successes in agave spirits production in the region. This course will also delve into  the proper service aspects of fine spirits such as mezcal, ranging from Michelin-star service to more rustic environments. 

Upon completion of the course, the Certified Mezcal Sommelier will be well-versed in theory, service, and organoleptic analysis as they pertain to agave spirits craftsmanship.

Registration for the Mezcal Sommelier Course is open to anyone (over legal drinking age in their place of residence) in front-line hospitality industry, travel & tourism sectors, alcohol retailers, bars & restaurants, importers/exporters & brand ambassadors, wholesale, and retail sectors of the food and beverage industry, anyone considering a career as a professional sommelier, or supervisory/management/leadership positions -or anyone interested in learning more about agave spirits history, production, service standards, and food pairing concepts.

  • The course is intense and fast-paced, covering a lot of information (and by no means all) about the world of mezcal and other agave spirits, as well as several tasting exercises, and food pairing concepts.

PRE-REQUISITE:

Mezcal Specialist Certification +

Students must purchase a set of six (6) or twelve (12) ISO/INAO tasting glasses prior to the course.

Mezcal Sommelier Certificate

ASI’s Level 2 Pin

The examination consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, fill in the blank, matching, and open ended paragraph questions reflecting the content of the course and handbook and must be completed within 40 minutes. A minimum score of 80% is required to earn the Mezcal Sommelier Certification and lapel pin.

  • After passing the Mezcal Sommelier Course and Examination, students are eligible to register for the Certified Agave Spirits Advisor Course and Examination.
  • Tutoring and re-examination fee: $200
